A community traditional taiko group “Date no Kurofune Taiko” from Ogatsu town in Ishinomaki. The aim of the group is to restore and continue the tradition of Ogatsu Taiko after the town was completely destroyed.

I have had the pleasure to meet and get to know the group in 2012, and be invited to their rehearsals and performances to document the group.

In 2013 we plan to interview older members of the group from the town, about the history of the group and the stories of the music and it’s place in the culture of the region.

Above is their performance at Ito, Shizuoka Prefecture in August 2012. Below is a short excerpt from a regular rehearsal session in Ishinomaki, where the links between current members and the younger generation can be seen clearly.
